Warm Up (Prediction)

Do you think life could exist beyond Earth?

Yes, it could. The universe is extremely large, so it seems possible that some other planets have conditions for life.

What tool helps astronomers search for faraway planets?

A telescope helps astronomers observe stars, planets, and signals from far away.

Before reading, why might contact with aliens be difficult?

Contact might be difficult because the distance between planets and stars is enormous.

Step 2

精读 4A Life Beyond Earth?

这篇文章是一个带有推理的问题: Life Beyond Earth? 读的时候要把“观点”和“理由”分开: 谁相信?为什么相信?科学家怎样寻找证据?

Round 1: Main Idea

What is the main idea of 4A?

Some astronomers believe intelligent life exists beyond Earth, and new tools may help humans identify planets or signals from far away.

Who are the two astronomers mentioned in the reading?

The reading mentions Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett. They believe intelligent life may exist elsewhere in the universe.

What are the two big reasons for believing life may exist beyond Earth?

The first reason is time: the universe is very old. The second reason is size: the universe is huge and has many galaxies, stars, and planets.

While Reading (Fact Hunting & Logic)

How have powerful telescopes changed the search?

Powerful telescopes allow scientists to identify small planets in other solar systems, including planets that might possibly support life.

Why does Shostak not think aliens have already visited Earth?

He thinks the distance between planets and stars is too great, so visiting Earth would be extremely difficult.

How might intelligent beings contact us?

They might use radio signals or flashes of light to communicate across space.

Structure & Function

Why does the article use a question mark in the title?

The question mark shows that the topic is uncertain. The article is exploring evidence and possibilities, not giving a final proven answer.

How would a concept map help summarize this article?

A concept map can put the central idea in the middle, then separate reasons, tools, and possible ways of contact around it.

What is the function of the distance detail?

The distance detail explains why alien visits are unlikely and why signals may be more realistic than spaceships.

Key Words in Context

Explain universe, galaxy, and planet.

The universe is all of space. A galaxy is a huge group of stars and planets. A planet is a large object that circles a star.

What does identify mean in this reading?

Identify means to find and recognize something, such as a planet in another solar system.

Step 3

继续针对 4A 提问: 质疑与评估

这里仍然只围绕文章 A,从“复述信息”走向“判断信息”。

Identifying IdeasComparing & Reflecting

Method 1: Speculating with Evidence

先找证据,再说判断。

Which idea is speculation, and which details make it reasonable?

The idea that intelligent life exists beyond Earth is speculation. It is reasonable because the universe is very old and huge, and scientists have found many faraway planets.

Is “aliens have visited Earth” supported by the article?

No. The article says Shostak does not think this is likely because the distance is too great.

Which is more realistic in the article: a visit or a signal?

A signal is more realistic because radio signals or flashes of light can travel across space more easily than living beings can travel between stars.

Method 2: Comparing & Reflecting

把文章观点和自己的经验放在一起比较。

Would finding a simple life form be as exciting as finding intelligent life?

It would still be exciting because it would show life can exist beyond Earth. Intelligent life would be different because it might communicate with us.

Should humans send messages into space?

Maybe, but carefully. Sending messages could help contact intelligent life, but people should discuss risks and decide together.

If we received a signal, what should people do first?

People should check the evidence carefully, share information with scientists around the world, and avoid quick conclusions.

Step 4

4A 文章思维导图

这一张图只总结文章 A。试着先用自己的话说一遍,再对照下面的结构。

mindmap root((Life Beyond Earth?)) "Central Question" "Could intelligent life exist elsewhere?" "People" "Seth Shostak" "Alexandra Barnett" "Reasons" "Time: universe is very old" "Size: universe is huge" "Many galaxies and planets" "Tools" "Powerful telescopes" "Identify small planets" "Contact" "Visits are unlikely" "Distance is too great" "Radio signals" "Flashes of light" "Big Idea" "Evidence first, then belief"
Can you retell the article in four sentences by using the mind map?

Some astronomers believe intelligent life may exist beyond Earth. Their reasons are that the universe is very old and very large, with many possible planets. Powerful telescopes help scientists identify planets in other solar systems. Because the distances are huge, contact by signals may be more realistic than visits.

Writing 输出与参考范文

Writing Prompt

Write an opinion paragraph: Do you think humans will find life beyond Earth? Use at least two reasons from the reading or your research.

  1. State your opinion clearly.
  2. Give Reason 1 about time or size.
  3. Give Reason 2 about tools or planets.
  4. Mention one difficulty, such as distance.
  5. End with a careful conclusion.

Reference Essay

I think humans may find life beyond Earth one day, but it may take a long time. My first reason is that the universe is extremely old and huge. If there are so many stars and planets, Earth may not be the only place with life.

My second reason is that scientists now have powerful tools. Telescopes can help them identify small planets around other stars. Scientists can also search for signals, such as radio signals or flashes of light.

However, contact will be difficult because the distance in space is enormous. I do not think aliens will simply visit Earth like in movies. I think the first evidence may be a small signal or a simple life form. That would still be one of the most exciting discoveries in history.
