Music Tempo Guidelines for Exercise

Which BPM range might fit a workout?

Warm Up (Prediction)

What kind of music makes you want to move?

Fast music with a clear beat often makes me want to move because my body can follow the rhythm easily.

Before reading, how could music help people exercise longer?

Music might distract people from tired feelings and put them in a better mood, so exercise feels easier.

What do you predict BPM means?

BPM means beats per minute. It tells us how fast the music is.

Step 2

精读 3A Move to the Music

Round 1: Main Idea

What is the main idea of 3A?

Music can help people exercise because it can distract them, improve their mood, give energy, and motivate them to keep moving.

Why is BPM important in this reading?

BPM shows the speed of a song. The reading says songs around 120–140 BPM are often good for exercise because they match the heart rate many people want during a workout.

Is this article mainly about famous singers, or about how music affects exercise?

It is mainly about how music affects exercise. Song examples are used only as supporting details.

While Reading (Fact Hunting & Logic)

What are two simple ways music helps during exercise?

First, music distracts people from feeling tired. Second, upbeat music can improve mood and give people more energy.

Why might a very slow song be less useful for a workout?

A very slow song may not match the movement or heart rate of exercise, so it may not motivate the body to move steadily.

What was special about the Jymmin machines?

The machines made music while people exercised, so the participants were not only listening to music; they were helping create it.

Structure & Function

Why does the writer include examples of songs and BPM numbers?

The examples make the idea concrete. Readers can compare songs and see why tempo matters for exercise.

What detail supports the idea that control matters?

Many participants felt less tired when they used Jymmin machines. One possible reason is that they had more control over the music.

What detail supports the idea that music can be social?

Jymmin was not just a private listening activity. People made music while exercising, so it could feel more social and motivating.

Key Words in Context

Explain beat, BPM, and range using the article.

A beat is the regular pulse in music. BPM means beats per minute. A range is the space between two numbers, such as 120–140 BPM.

What does distract mean here?

Distract means to take your attention away from something. In this article, music can distract people from tiredness.

Step 3

Identifying IdeasComparing & Reflecting

Method 1: Identifying Supporting Details

Which details support the main idea best?

The BPM range, the effect on mood and energy, and the Jymmin experiment all support the idea that music can help exercise.

Which detail is a number, and why is it useful?

The 120–140 BPM range is a number. It is useful because it gives readers a specific way to choose workout music.

Which detail is an experiment?

The Jymmin machine study is an experiment because participants exercised with music and then with machines that let them make music.

Method 2: Reflecting

Do you agree that faster music is always better for exercise?

No. Faster is not always better. The music should match the exercise, and very fast music may feel stressful or hard to follow.

Would Jymmin help every person exercise more? Why or why not?

Not every person. Some people may enjoy controlling music with others, but some may prefer quiet exercise or simple listening.

What is one weakness of the article’s argument?

The article tells us music can help, but different people like different music, so one BPM rule cannot fit everyone perfectly.

Step 4

mindmap root((Move to the Music)) "Main Idea" "Music can help exercise" "How Music Helps" "Distracts from tiredness" "Improves mood" "Adds energy" "Motivates movement" "BPM" "Beat = pulse" "120-140 BPM often works" "Tempo should match exercise" "Experiment" "Jymmin machines" "Exercise creates music" "People felt less tired" "Possible Reasons" "More control" "More social" "Open Question" "Could it help depression?"
Can you retell the article in four sentences by using the mind map?

Music can help people exercise by changing attention, mood, and energy. The article explains that BPM matters because the speed of a song can match a workout. It also describes Jymmin machines, where people make music while exercising. The experiment suggests that control and social activity may make exercise feel less tiring.

Step 5

Writing

Writing Prompt

Make an exercise playlist with three songs. Explain the BPM or tempo of each song, when you would use it, and why it would help you exercise.

  1. Name your exercise goal.
  2. Choose three songs.
  3. Explain each song’s tempo or BPM.
  4. Connect the music to mood, energy, or control.
  5. End with your best song and reason.

Reference Essay

My exercise goal is to run and stretch for thirty minutes. I would choose three songs for different parts of the workout.

First, I would use a medium-speed song for warm-up because my body needs time to get ready. Next, I would use a song with a strong beat and about 130 BPM for running. This song would help me keep a steady rhythm and feel more energetic.

For the last part, I would choose a slower song for stretching. It would help my mood become calm again. I think the best workout song is the running song because its beat can distract me from feeling tired and motivate me to continue.
